Luggage restrictions

When you hire a private jet it’s important that you factor in the amount of luggage you would like to take. Luggage is also a determining factor in the size of the aircraft as certain oversized items like golf clubs, skis, and large suitcases can’t fit in every private jet.

Unlike airliners, not all private aircraft have baggage holds and require luggage to be stored in the hold or onboard the jet. If excessive luggage and large numbers of passengers aren’t an issue, the size of the aircraft may not be important as most will often request the cheapest option, though some may passengers prefer larger jets.

The main piece of carry on luggage can weigh up to 23 kg although on smaller aircraft such as light jets, we recommend medium size cases (15kg) or soft bags on these type of aircraft.

For family holidays, we do recommend sticking to a medium size suitcase size, usually one per passenger. These suitcases are comfortable for unpredicted situations. You can also bring hand luggage with you onboard the aircraft.

You may want to buy hard-sided luggage if you’ll be packing breakable items.

It may offer better security than soft-sided baggage because it can’t be ripped open as easily and usually has integrated locks.

Heavy jets, as they’re known, are preferred especially on long-distance or overnight flights so there is more room to stretch out and sleep.

Small aircraft will have tighter restrictions, due to their small hold, some are more suited to soft sided bags, or golf bags due to their shape.

For those who are travelling light, or  for day trips you could charter a Hawker 400XP,  Bombardier Learjet 75, Hawker 800XP or Embraer Phenom 300, if you do bring light luggage then we advise to bring soft bags. One per person.

If you’re travelling with approx 8- 10 standard size cases, then look no further than the Cessna Citation XLS which has the largest hold in it’s class.

Travelling with 10 or more cases/bags then you will really need to charter an aircraft such as the Embraer Legacy 650, Bombardier Global 6000 or Gulfstream G650. Not only do they have a spacious hold they also have excellent onboard space.

Travelling for golf?

Golfers like to bring their own clubs – again the Cessna Citation XLS or the Embraer Legacy 650 are great for golfers.

Note: The Hawker series and also the Hawker 400XP aren’t great for large amounts of luggage due to it’s narrow hold and also on the H800XP you load the luggage through the main door which isn’t ideal.

What can you take ?

You can take toiletries or other liquids that are in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100ml), and they must all fit in a one quart (one litre) clear zip top bag. This includes liquids, gels, and aerosols. If you must pack more toiletries than these allowances, you will have to pack them in checked luggage.

So before you book your aircraft, always check that you have one that is suitable for your flight. Let us know if you plan to bring lots of cases, golf clubs, prams etc and we will source the best available aircraft for you.
