For business flights the customs immigration and quarantine process is swift and not an onerous procedure in the UK unlike commercial travel, Customs, Immigration and Quarantine clearance for passengers on a private jet, are done either over in the main terminal or at the VIP terminal here in Manchester.

Customs and Immigration

Customs deals with goods. Immigration deals with people. Please be aware that all passengers will be required to pass through Customs and Immigration. Border Force secures the border and promotes national prosperity by facilitating the legitimate movement of individuals and goods, whilst preventing those that would cause harm from entering the UK.

Each airport and private jet handling agents have different procedures. Clearance usually takes around 15 minutes, customs declarations and immigration cards must be fully completed and submitted the officer.

Procedure

After an international flight ie New York to Manchester, on arrival you and your luggage will be escorted from the plane by members of the ground handling staff, to the reception in the VIP lounge. A representative from Border Force will come over to the private jet terminal to check all the relevant documents. Otherwise your aircraft will head directly to the main terminal to clear customs & immigration.

You will then be driven back to the private jet terminal, where your luggage will have been loaded into your chauffeur car. From time to time you will be required to be screened or have your luggage checked. This process usually takes around 15 minutes.

 

You must present your passport with validity extending for the full length of your stay. Arrival and departure cards are required in Manchester, however this varies from airport to airport.

International Departures & Arrivals

As we know, enhanced security measures mean that checking in can take longer than it used to. It is advised that you arrive at the airport in plenty of time. Over at the main terminal if you’re flying commercial it’s suggested that you arrive 30 minutes prior to domestic flights, 2 hours for European flights and 3 hours for international flights.

However if you’re flying by private jet you will need to be at the terminal just 20 minutes prior to departure, or if you’re travelling on a large aircraft just 40 minutes prior to departure to go through the screening process.   

 

Like all other major UK airports, Manchester has strict security checks in place. Luggage size and content allowances can impede your progress if you aren’t aware of the restrictions before you pack.

Before you board

Your ‘carrier’ (for example airline or transport provider) will check your passport and other travel documents. They’ll send this information electronically to Border Force.

 

Border control

Your passport or identity card will be checked.

You must:

  • have your passport or identity card ready – remove it from a holder or wallet if you use one
  • remove your sunglasses if you’re wearing them
  • move through passport control together if you’re in a family

Overview

Your passport or identity card will be checked when you arrive at a UK port or airport to make sure you’re allowed to come into the country. It must be valid for the whole of your stay.

You may also need a visa to come into or travel through the UK, depending on your nationality.

There will be no change to the rights and status of EU citizens living in the UK until 2021. You and your family can apply for ‘settled status’ to continue living in the UK after June 2021. The scheme will open fully by March 2019.

What you can bring with you depends on where you’re travelling from. You must declare to customs:

Travelling with €10,000 or more?

If you’re travelling with more than €10,000 (or equivalent in other currencies or assets) it must be declared to Customs before you enter or leave the EU.

Although you are not subject to passport control, you will need to pass through HM Customs after collecting your baggage.

To ensure a safe, quick journey through the airport, please note the following:

  • Never carry anything into the UK for somebody else.
  • Never bring prohibited goods into the UK. If in doubt ask at the Customs enquiry point.
  • If you are unsure about your duty/tax-free entitlement, go to the Customs enquiry point.
  • If you are connecting from an international flight to another international flight you will not need to clear Customs.
  • If you are connecting from an international flight to a UK flight you must clear Customs and Immigration.

You’re not from an EEA country

Travelling by private jet is a much faster way, to go through customs & immigration whether it’s a business or leisure flight. Just make sure all the relevant documents are filled in correctly.
